Is Medjool Saudi? Where it grows: Qassim, Madinah, AlUla and Tabuk

Medjool comes from Morocco, and today it is grown in several regions of Saudi Arabia. This is what the sources say about it there:

  • Qassim: It is grown there, and comes after Sukkari in the output of its farms. (SPA)
  • Madinah: Medjool is among its leading date varieties, with Sagai, Khalas and Sufri. Madinah is the third-largest date-producing region of Saudi Arabia, with more than 8 million palms. (SPA)
  • AlUla: Among the leading date varieties produced there, with Barni, Anbara, Safawi and Hamra. (SPA)
  • Tabuk: One of the varieties it produces, alongside Helwat Tayma, Khalas, Sukkari, Barni and others. (SPA)

So Medjool is a variety grown in Saudi Arabia today that came from outside it. These are the regions where the variety is grown in general, not the origin of the particular Medjool we sell.

Storing Medjool once it arrives

Our answer on storing dates, Medjool among them: Somewhere cool and dry, away from the sun, or in the fridge if the weather is hot — so they stay soft for longer. They do not need freezing. If sugar forms grains on the surface, that is the date's own sugar crystallising, not a flaw and not spoilage.
